TOURNEH
Today -to no surprise- I played loads of video games. Today was a bit different, however. Today was a bit more organized. Today we organized and played in a huge tournament that included everyone in the entire intersession. This was good because I was playing against people that have never played the game before, and vice versa. We had three games all laid out in the classic tournament brackets. Unfortunately for me, I missed out on the Street Fighter 4 tournament, which was my strong suit and had hoped to rape in. I found out the winner was Daniel, a player who I stacked up very well against in the past and could have possibly won against. After the sf4 tourney we played some Blaz-Blue. This is a game I despise, being an almost die-hard fan of BB's brother series, Guilty Gear. Until the tournament, I had never touched this game filled with fanservice and weaboo candy. I merely watched people play it in days before.
It seemed to share a somewhat strong likeness with guilty gear. But there are major differences, instead of the rustic red of Guilty Gear, there is a soft blue surrounding the menus and health bars in Blaz-Blue. The fighting systems are almost the same, save some different powers and a shifted different combo system. Going just on what I knew about Guilty Gear and fighting games in general, I managed to make it to the semi-finals and win the third place match. I had a good time, and I might check out BB sometime.
The next game we played tourney style was COD Black Ops. This is a fairly new game, though I have had a strong background in console shooters and have played COD before even in tournament play. I was dropped into a match of 4.
Two players didnt know left from right in the combat setting of black ops. The other guy was a vet of the series and was pretty good, good enough to beat yours truly. I lost and he moved on. Nonetheless, I had fun.
Before during and after the tournament I was playing Armagetron Advanced with all the people that brought in their laptops and we had a simply smashing time. Jolly good.

Ye olde tron
Today, I had the wonderful opritunity to watch a retro classic. Thats right folks, we watched a dinosaur roll on its back for around two hours this morning, and that dinosaur was all the way from the year 1982. Trons pretty enterdtaining and it definitely ponies up to the current movie, not that I should be judging the original off of Legacy. Now, back to the fact that this puppy is from 1982. For the time, Tron has the sickest special effects with tons of eye candy that kept my eyes constantly drooling. This movie has an excellent art style that I love that has inspired many movies and video games generations since. On top of all this, the CGI in this movie is absolutely stellar for 1982. Why do I say this you ask? Think of it this way, back then, people didnt know what three-dee even WAS. Not only were the tanks and light cycles rendered in beautiful 3d but they didnt look at all bad either.
On a final note, I would like to add that the events in Tron and Tron Legacy do not coincide. In Tron Legacy, Jeff Bridges created the grid. Then how com in the original tron it was already there? Yeah.

Scawt Peelgrim DA MOOVIE
In short, I have been exposed to Brian Lee O'Malleys works before. Before today, I have both read the comic and seen the movie. I am not taking note of this in dismay however, as a matter of fact I am elated at any opportunity to re watch the movie no matter how many times I might have seen it before. Now, much to your imminent pain and misfortune, I am going to not do a direct review of the movie. I am however, going to do some hybrid between my commentary, a recount of the days events, and an actual review. Here goes.
So I came to school today knowing we were going to be watching the Scott Pilgrim movie. I nearly creamed myself with joy at the sight of the blu-ray edition, because I now can enjoy my beautiful and crisp 1080p picture and wonderous uncompressed sound. However, I then reverse creamed when I found that Aaron doesn't have any hdmi cables for his ps3 and that was todays largest disappointment. Once I finally came to terms with the fact that I am going to be watching a blu-ray movie on a 1080p television receiving signal from a Playstation 3 in STANDARD DEFINITION, I had actually enjoyed the movie (again). The story is loosely based off of the graphic novels by BLO'M (yes I actually abbreviated Brian Lee O'Malley) with some changearounds in the plot structure, minor tweaks, and quite a few cut parts. Overall the movie is, put simply, a great movie. It also stays very true to the original graphic novels and conveys most of the themes very well. Scot Pilgrim gets my thumbs up for sure.

Today I had the wonderful chance to play a little fighting game called Street Fighter 4. I had the PC version running with a couple of joypads hooked up to my comp. I played this against numerous opponents over the hour span I had it running. Needless to say, I mopped the floor with those filthy malnourished scrubs. Noone could ante up to the caliber of smack down I was laying down earlier today. Enough of me telling you facts, lets get on with my review.
Street Fighter 4 is one of the newer editions to one of the most famous and integral fighting games to the genre and video games as a whole. Street Figher 4 is a brand new and modern version of your favorite series of fighting games. SF4 is also one of the very first Street Fighter games to be rendered in mind blowing 3d. Thats right folks, 2009 and Capcom is finally no longer slaving away in their sdk's painstakingly making hundreds of sprites for each character! Finally we can enjoy our favorite fighter filled with mind blowing glowing hadoukens and up the ass particle effects, yo. Enough about the totally zany graphics and technology engine, lets talk about what makes this game fun. Speaking of fun, this game is an absolute blast to play, especially if you're a total boss at it like me. This game has your regular cast of characters that you're used to like Ryu and Sagat, plus a few newcomers like El Fuerte and Rufus. As usual, everyone in the game has the basic layout of quick attacks, strong attacks and fierce attacks. On top of these basic attacks, each of these characters new and old have their own special moves that you can execute with a mix of directional inputs and attack moves. This can leave to some pretty interesting results when going against others, at times that you can use these specials much to your advantage, other times they will leave you very vulnerable, so timing is key here. Overall SF4 is a very strong and much needed 3D addition to this famous fighting series.

This morning, and I mean earlier than when I played Mario Kart and SF4 with my bros, we talked about nothing other than everyones favorite game series, Pokemon. We basically touched up on many aspects of the wide array of 'things' that Pokemon can morph into. We discussed errythang from the card games and how we didnt know how to play, to the Pokemon video game series that we all know how to play. Overall, the general feel towards Pokemon as a whole is a very positive one. What can I say, we all love Pokemon. We then talked about Digimon, a very similar but not as cool series based around monsters you can catch and train. After a quick google search, we concluded that Digimon was not the originator and was in fact biting off of Pokemon. After this, we watched smosh's rendition of the Pokemon theme song, always funny.

Appreciating Video Games - Second Chance
Earlier this morning, I enjoyed handfuls of a nifty little game called "Metal Slug Advance." I played through the entirety of the second mission and almost all of the third. I saved and rage quit after a few tries at the third boss.
Metal Slug Advance is a fast paced and light hearted side scrolling shooter based on the original Metal Slug series for the Neo Geo arcade systems. This game maintains virtually all aspects of its older brothers by including the same cast of iconic characters and zany weaponry. The look and feel of the enemies is the same. The POW's are still there with their many gifts ranging from a heavy machine gun to some tasty chicken. Many of the original sounds are present too. As a matter of fact the only thing that is really different about this game is the addition to a 'card' system. The goal of the card system is to offer replay value. Every time you complete a stage or do any other important (or sometimes obscure) feat, you are rewarded with a card. Some of these cards can slightly alter how the game plays i.e. extra grenades, increased walk speed etc. I dont really know what you could get as a reward if you manage to obtain all the cards.
I found this game very fun and rewarding. After some time, however, this game can get very frustrating as some sections are quite punishing if not executed perfectly. I also feel that the boss fights arent as rewarding as the level sections of the game. The boss fights are also not very innovative. This aside, the game has some pretty ridiculous bosses and you feel like a total boss aferwards.

Pic related, its the third boss, unoriginal and very frustrating.
A full list of the various cards you can collect.

Today we watched a brief history of how video games came into arcades and eventually, into our homes. The documentary mentioned some very landmark titles such as missile defense and pac man, and was a pretty accurate history as far as I'm concerned. Afterward, we watched another short documentary on the history of the NES. This was very similar to the documentary we wathched earlier, probably because they were both made by the same people. It was the same deal, but this time it was a brief history on the NES.
After both documentaries, we discussed our opinions on the gaming industry as a whole, past and present. Next, we discussed a ratings system that we should grade our games on when we review them.
Time for some video games.

Relatives in a movie
I watched The Last Starfighter in class today. It was a very kinky 80s movie with some pretty cool computer imagery for its time. The cast was very good and kept things fresh despite the fact that they all looked like bunnies that were all related. The main character Alex, looked like a dirty incestuous fiend whenever he made out with his 'girlfriend' Meg. Our little couple looks like they could be siblings as they linger about their cozy trailer park. Alex's mother looks almost like an older version of Meg, as a matter of fact the only person who didnt look related to everyone else in the trailer park was Otis, the man who ran the shop.

Pic related, its my favorite character, Grig. He is my favorite from this movie from the way he mentors Alex as he is going through trying times.
